Polkadot vs etherium

#1

How will the launching of polkadot later this year affect development? Will the team make an changes or focus?

Polkadot is great! Our goal is to be chain agnostic, but there aren’t concrete plans (for now) for tailoring a version that works on Polkadot. This could change, and I expect would require much less work given that Enigma is building its stack based on WASM, and we’re already trying to stay compatible with Web3F’s work.

Several of enigmas partners will be developing on polkadot. There is no indication of enigma building on polkadot. Chainlink will also be developing on polkadot. There is concern among many in the etherium community that developer migration from etherium to polkadot will weaken etherium network. Questions:

  1. If enigma partners are building parachains on polkadot how will that affect enigma as some partners may move away from etherium?

  2. If enigma is part of web3stack why is it not building on polkadot?

Teams building on Polkadot

A number of teams have signaled their intention to build parachains on Polkadot. Some of these teams are preparing for Polkadot’s launch today by building on the Substrate technology stack. Polkadot parachains don’t have to be built on Substrate, but…

Hey @Cryptojoe,
We’ve been focused on getting to our first distributed release. That release uses Ethereum 1.0 as the consensus layer. For us, this means focusing our efforts. As a team, we do keep up with the ecosystem and follow development efforts across different projects. As has been mentioned previously, we aim to be eventually chain agnostic-- the goal is to serve users and developers.

To address your questions specifically:

  1. I am not aware that experimenting with or building on polkadot will preclude developers from working as well with Ethereum. Since polkadot has not yet launched, it is hard to comment on this in a meaningful way.
  2. The web3stack, as defined by the web 3 foundation, are components that are necessary building blocks for a decentralized web. We believe Enigma is part of that solution.

As always, our goal is to enable true decentralization, data privacy, and real-world applications. We’re excited by progress made in that direction, by any project.
